After losing quarterback Deshaun Watson to a season-ending Achilles injury in Sunday’s 21-14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Cleveland Browns are turning to Jameis Winston as their starting QB for their Week 8 matchup against the Baltimore Ravens.
But that’s not Cleveland’s biggest news of the week.
Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns are also making a change within their coaching hierarchy as well as offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey will take over play-calling duties from head coach Kevin Stefanski, who’s assumed that role since taking over as head coach in 2020.
The Browns are the worst offensive team statistically in the NFL this season, ranking 32nd in total offense (253.9 yards per game), 30th in passing offense (159.6 yards per game) and scoring offense (15.6 points per game), and 29th in rushing offense (94.3 yards per game).
Dorsey had great success as a play-caller in his last stint as the Buffalo Bills OC. The team had the second-best offense in the NFL in 2022 in terms of total yards and points scored, and the Bills were fourth and sixth, respectively, in those same categories last season before Dorsey was relieved of his duties after Week 10.
Most feel Dorsey’s firing had more to do with the Bills being 5-5 at the time and needing some sort of shakeup rather than the job he was doing as an offensive coordinator.
With running back Nick Chubb back in the fold and making the switch under center to Winston, who has 80 games of starting experience and plus two 4,000-yard seasons and a 5,000-yard season under his belt, things could start looking up for the Browns in terms of offensive production.
