Bruins GM Discusses Boston's Trade Deadline Approach

Bruins GM Don Sweeney discussed what the Bruins could end up doing at the deadline.

During the Boston Bruins' Feb. 5 matchup against the New York Rangers, general Don Sweeney spoke with the TNT broadcast. While on there, he talked about the Bruins' approach for the 2025 NHL trade deadline.

"Well, it’s been a little unique for us this year, getting out of the gate not as fast as we would like," Sweeney said. "We’re in the middle of things. It's a tough exercise to sort of play both sides of the street, but that's almost every year what a general manager is required to do, and test what's out there, what's available, how you can improve hopefully. We have some areas we would like to, but we have to keep an eye... You know, if we have more injuries or we don't do the job between now and the deadline, we may have to take a different path."

In January, Bruins president Cam Neely said that the Bruins are considering "two paths," being either buyers or retooling their roster at the deadline. Sweeney's statement proved that this is still the mindset the Bruins have, with the deadline now being a month away.

The Bruins' play leading up to the deadline will significantly affect the club's direction at the deadline. If they continue struggling with consistency and do not jump up in the standings, they could be sellers for the first time in years. However, if they heat up, perhaps we could see Sweeney end up bring in some talent by March 7. Their two biggest needs are a first-line center and a scoring winger.

It will be intriguing to see what Sweeney decides to do at the deadline from here. If they elect to sell, some pending unrestricted free agents to watch could include Trent Frederic, Justin Brazeau, Parker Wotherspoon, and Cole Koepke.
