Bruins’ Jeremy Swayman needs to be much, much better next season

When we entered the 2024-25 season, Boston Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman had just signed an eight-year deal with an $8.25 million contract.

Swayman was coming off another excellent season in goal during the 2023-24 campaign, as he had a 25-10-8 record, a .916% save percentage, 3 shutouts and 22.79 goals saved above expected through 44 games.

This season, things haven’t gone right for the Bruins netminder, who holds a 22-28-6 record and a 3.06 goals-against average and .895 save percentage through 56 games.

Though Swayman delivered some exceptional performances that secured key victories, his overall consistency remains a concern. Critical errors and moments of hesitation during high-pressure situations have drawn attention and criticism. It’s clear that Swayman needs to elevate his game significantly next season to meet the expectations of the team and its fans.

Consistency Is Key Swayman’s most glaring weakness is his inability to maintain steady form. He often shines in one game only to falter in the next—a pattern that a goaltender at the NHL level simply cannot afford, especially on a team like the Bruins with a rich history and high standards.

Handling Pressure Better Playoff games are the ultimate test for any goaltender, and Swayman needs to show composure, sharp reflexes, and the mental toughness required to thrive under intense scrutiny. It’s crucial for him to overcome psychological hurdles and embrace high-stakes challenges.

Improving in Critical Save Situations Swayman’s ability to excel in “one-on-one” situations or fast-paced offensive attacks needs considerable development. This will demand focused training to sharpen his instincts, boost his physical readiness, and refine his decision-making abilities during pivotal moments.

Support from Teammates and Coaches Of course, Swayman cannot shoulder the responsibility alone. A solid defensive system from his teammates and strategic guidance from the coaching staff will be vital to his improvement.

The upcoming season will be a defining one for Jeremy Swayman—not just to showcase his talent but also to solidify his role in the team’s core lineup. He has the potential to become one of the NHL’s finest goaltenders, but achieving that status will require relentless effort and dedication.
