Super Bowl champion cornerback Darius Slay is looking for a job. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in need of a cornerback. Sounds like a perfect match.
At least Buccaneers legend Gerald McCoy seems to think so. He has reached out to general manager Jason Licht and is literally campaigning for him to sign Slay.
McCoy has taken his campaign to social media and is applying pressure on Licht to sign Slay.
It has been reported Tampa Bay is looking to move away from Jamel Dean at one of the cornerback spots. That opens a position for Slay to come in and inherit in training camp.
The Super Bowl champion is no youngster. He is 34-years old and wants to squeeze one more season out of his body.
Slay has indicated he only wants to play for a contender and the Bucs check that box. They have been to the playoffs the past two seasons and head coach Todd Bowles has made tremendous strides with the offense since the reincarnation of Baker Mayfield.
Slay went to three Pro Bowls with the Eagles and was part of their championship team last season. There reportedly have been no talks between the two sides, but McCoy is looking to change that.
Slay is not the same player he was five years ago, but he is still serviceable. He had a PFF coverage grade of 68.9 coverage grade last season. He would be a good upgrade for Tampa Bay for one season while Bowles & Co. groom a youngster to take over the position in 2026.
He would probably be cost friendly in terms of the salary-cap and has a tremendous upside. He is really Licht's type of free agent. The question now is who makes the move first.
Slay is from the south and the thought of playing close to family and friends might be enticing for him.
