For the third time in three years, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield will have a new offensive coordinator with Josh Grizzard taking over from Liam Coen.
Grizzard was the passing game coordinator last season under Coen, so he knows how the offense runs, and now that he has his first shot in the league at this position, he's determined to make the most of it.
But just a year removed from learning Coen's system, the offense might be put off by having to learn Grizzard's, but he is confident that he can take what Coen built and make it even better.
"At the end of the day, as coaches, we need to be able to adjust to scheme," Grizzard said. "It could be on a yearly basis, [or] it could be on a weekly basis, to put the players in a position to score points. That's what we're tasked to do, and now having another offseason to be able to add to that and add different pieces, we feel like last year was just the foundation to be able to take it to the next level."
That will be no easy task, as the Buccaneers' offense was the fourth-highest scoring in football in 2024 (29.5 p/g), and their run game was the fourth-best (149.2 yards per game).
Plus, Baker Mayfield had his best season as a pro, throwing for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns, so Coen set the bar high.
But Grizzard is confident he can build on that and make Tampa Bay a better offensive juggernaut than it was a year ago.
Challenge accepted.
