In 2024, the Houston Texans' offense could have passed as one of the worst in the league. Sure, it wasn't because they had a guy like C.J. Stroud bailing them out every now and then, but it was that bad.
Whether it was the horrible offensive line play, the terrible injury luck, or Bobby Slowik calling terrible plays in a terrible scheme, the offense was bad regardless. This year, under new offensive coordinator Nick Caley, who was with the Los Angeles Rams before under Sean McVay, the offense could really be much better.
Because of that, the new weapons they have added, and some of the team being healthier now, there is no telling what will happen. And, you have to add in the fact that the Texans are adding a new wrinkle to the offense that hasn't been there the last two years.
C.J. Stroud will have a say in the offense.“Yeah, that would be between me and [OC Nick Caley]. And that was something that I did want, and I've gotten that now," Stroud told reporters during mandatory minicamp. "But that takes ownership. We've been able to watch a lot of [Tom] Brady.
"And there were clips back in 2003 or 2004 when he and Josh McDaniels first started. And so, it took him time to master it. So, it did take time for me to master it fully. But I am buying into it and trying my best to be as great as I can at it. So yeah, but it's something that I wanted and I'm getting.”
I know that everyone who isn't a New England Patriots fan may hate hearing that, but if there is any QB coordinator duo you want to mimic, it has to be that one during that time frame. Of course, McDaniels wasn't the OC until 2006, but he was the QB coach in 2004. Those two won a handful of Super Bowls together.
And, I know his offenses didn't work out with the Las Vegas Raiders, but they're using McDaniels as the example because of the freedom he gave Brady within the offense and at the line of scrimmage. That's what they want to do with Stroud because they like his processing and IQ of the game.
And that could really make their offense better.
