The Houston Texans have a significant injury concern on their hands going into their second preseason game, as tight end Brevin Jordan was carted off during practice on Monday.
Jordan, who was coming off a torn ACL, appeared to hurt his lower right leg during an 11-on-11 drill.
According to Jonathan M Alexander of the Houston Chronicle, Jordan was in tears as he left the field for further evaluation.
“It’s tough for him, obviously … knowing how much work he’s put in to get back to this point,” head coach DeMeco Ryans said following practice, via ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime.
According to reporters on the scene, Jordan jumped and landed awkwardly after trying to corral a pass from quarterback CJ Stroud during an 11-on-11 drill. Jordan initially stood up with the assistance of trainers, insisting he was fine. Except he clearly wasn’t, and several teammates went to check on him and offer comfort.
Soon enough, Jordan burst out in tears. According to Bien-Aime, Jordan screamed “No!” before being placed onto the cart.
A 2021 fifth-round pick (147th overall) out of Miami, Jordan has 53 catches for 532 yards and five touchdowns in four seasons with Houston. He missed most of 2024 after tearing his ACL in Week 2.
In December, Jordan signed a one-year, $2.1 million extension, giving himself some security during the rehab process.
Jordan had two catches for 11 yards in Saturday’s 20-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
The 6-foot-3, 245-pound Jordan was having a strong camp and had positioned himself to be the No. 2 tight end in Houston behind Dalton Schultz.
That job could now possibly go to 2024 fourth-round pick (123rd overall) Cade Stover, who appeared in 15 games as a rookie. Stover recorded 15 catches for 233 yards and a touchdown. He had four more catches for 28 yards against the Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card Round.
Another potential tight end option, veteran Irv Smith Jr., is currently sidelined with a finger injury, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston. Wilson noted that Smith is expected to make a full recovery.
The Texans may look to bring in a few more players for tryouts ahead of their next preseason game, Saturday against the Carolina Panthers at NRG Stadium.
