Cam Ward could get the Titans over a league-worst 35 year drought by doing something he did five times last year at Miami

Since 2020, a little over a third of the league has put together a 50+ point offensive outing. Since the turn of the century, 30 teams have done it at least once. And the Vikings come close to making the cut, doing it in 1998.

The only team in the entire NFL left is the Tennessee Titans. And you have to go all the way back to 1990 and the Houston Oilers to find the last game in which they hung 50 points.

Cam Ward is going to see if he can’t change that.

Just last year, the Titans fought to break a 1002-day drought of reaching just 30 points in a game. They finally did it, though, in a disgusting Miami matchup against a dysfunctional Teddy Bridgewater-led team. But after watching them wander the desert on that milestone for as long as I did (all one thousand of those days!), the thought of aiming for twenty more points on top of the 30 they scratched and clawed to reach feels… dramatic.

The closest the Titans have gotten to breaking 50 since doing it last in 1990 was the 48 points they scored against the Packers in 2004. They’ve broken 45 a couple times more recently, scoring 45 and 46 in separate games in 2020. That was at the peak of the Arthur Smith offensive machine’s powers.

Brian Callahan’s offense is built to run up a score when operated correctly, though, and he now has a QB under center who has experience in that department. Cam Ward broke 50 points five separate times in his final year of college football. His Miami squad did it against Florida A&M, Ball State, USF, Louisville, and Duke in 2024.

None of those teams play in the NFL, it turns out. And that’s why doing it as a pro is going to be extremely difficult. But a high-flying offense is what Ward is expected to bring to Nashville eventually, and if he pans out as their franchise QB, he could be the one to remove the Titans’ name from the bottom of this embarrassing list.

Dangerous Decision-Making Trend

In high schools and QB camps across America, teach-tape is shown every year to developing passers that outlines the things they are never, ever, under any circumstances permitted to try. And, well, Cam Ward sure does love to try those things.

Specifically, he loves to throw back across his body. It’s something you see a good deal on his college tape, and it’s something you can hear OC Nick Holz poking fun at him for after his Pro Day a couple months ago.

Cam’s a creator, and he’s a self-proclaimed gunslinger. So he’s prone to rolling out of the pocket, escaping to buy time, and throwing against the grain of traffic if he sees an open man. And what makes this a tricky subject is that, well, he’s not one of those high school QBs trying to develop into a consistent passer. He’s not a limited pro who has to play within their physical and mental bounds, either. He’s not even a pro like Will Levis, who has a nasty streak of bad and dangerous decisions in his ledger.

He’s the 1st overall pick whose calling card is—at least in part—his creation ability. So trying to determine whether these kinds of attempts are bad decisions, or simply not going to give you the juice worth the squeeze, is a grey area. It’s an ability that can be a blessing and a curse, and it tends to live on a razor-thin margin between the two.

In the practices I’ve seen so far, he’s not afraid to try these passes with regularity. He’s just such a loose passer that you can tell it’s in his DNA to try tight windows and tricky angles. And it’s not hard to project that if he has turnover problems this year, it’s very likely to come from these kinds of tries. The difficult charge is on his new coaching staff to toe the line between encouragement and reigning-in his willingness to do dangerous things.
