Can The Last Of Us Keep Viewers Hooked With Abby Leading Season 3?

The Last of Us season 2 changed the story by shifting the focus from Ellie to Abby, and just like in the game, season 3 will follow Abby’s side of the story.

The Last Of Us Co-Creator Confirms Season 3 Will Focus On Abby: "I Can't Believe That They Let Us Structure The Series In This Way"

The Last of Us season 2 ended with an exciting moment when Ellie and Abby finally met. The final scene changed the story by shifting the focus from Ellie to Abby. Just like in the game, season 3 will follow Abby’s journey and show her side of the story. While the creators are excited about this fresh approach, it’s going to be a challenge because season two received mixed reviews.

Now, with Abby as the main character, viewers will also meet her friends, including Manny and Owen, who didn’t connect well with the audience. This shift in character focus is one major reason why adapting video games for live action becomes very difficult.

The second part has its own unique plot. While Ellie becomes the central character after Joel’s death, the game doesn’t follow her, as the focus shifts to new characters that players haven’t seen before. This makes the connection between the two parts feel different from a usual TV show, where season 2 simply picks up where season 1 ends. The game follows a new path but still stays connected to the first part, which makes it feel familiar.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, during an Emmys event in June, The Last of Us co-creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann confirmed that Abby will take the lead in season 3. Druckmann shared that he failed several times to turn the game into a show, but he’s glad it finally happened with HBO. He explained that the channel supported his choices, like killing Joel in season two, because that’s how the story was meant to progress. Druckmann then confirmed that the spotlight will shift towards Kaitlyn Dever.

He added, “I was sure that they wouldn’t let us do this when we started adapting this, but they’ve leaned into what makes, I believe, the story special. And allowed us not only the time but the creative freedom to be able to take these swings, and I think the audience really appreciates that.

Other than Kaitlyn Dever, The Last of Us also stars Bella Ramsey, Pedro Pascal, Isabela Merced, Kaitlyn Dever, Nico Parker and Anna Torv.
