Just like fellow Washington Capitals prospect Ilya Protas, defenseman Cam Allen is off to a hot start in the preseason.
Now in his fourth year with the OHL’s Guelph Storm, Allen has notched four points (2g, 2a) in his first three preseason games. The 19-year-old added a highlight-reel goal Saturday night against the Oshawa Generals.
The tally came early in the first period, and reversed what could have been a goal against into Guelph’s first tally of the night. Allen picked up the puck at his own net, dodging Oshawa’s Ethan Toms to pass to Carter Stevens the neutral zone. Once in the offensive zone, Alex McLean found a hustling Allen down the right wing with a seam pass that gave him a to a wide-open look to score.
Allen was the Capitals’ fifth-round pick in 2023, selected with the 136th overall pick. After undergoing shoulder surgery last summer, Allen missed the first half of last season recovering but returned to record 9 points (2g, 7a) for the Storm, also serving as alternate captain. He signed a three-year, entry level deal with the Capitals this summer; he also got a look from the Hershey Bears with a brief amateur tryout agreement in April.
Guelph will play their final preseason game on September 21 against the Peterborough Petes before kicking off the regular season against the Owen Sound on September 27.
