The Washington Capitals are in the news today with the announcement of a big signing. Today, they announced that defenceman Jakob Chychrun signs an extension with the club. This was the deal that Chychrun had been banking on. It is a maximum eight-year contract, worth an average annnual value of $9 million.
Jakob Chychrun Signs Extension With Washington Capitals
Not very often we can say it, but a trade has worked out for both sides. Last summer the Ottawa Senators shipped Chychrun to the Caps, with Nick Jensen coming back the other way. Jensen has been a great partner for Thomas Chabot on a top-four pairing for Ottawa. Meanwhile, Chychrun had been struggling on a Sens team. There was a bit of a logjam with the aforementioned Chabot, as well as up-and-comer Jake Sanderson, on the left side. Since moving to Washington, it has been nothing but roses.
Success in Washington
As Jakob Chychrun signs this extension, it was definitely deserved. From a team perspective, Washington is battling it out for the Presidents’ Trophy with the Winnipeg Jets. In fact, they are currently leading the race. In addition, Chychrun has been a huge contributing factor to their success. Chychrun is playing nearly 21 minutes a game and sees a good chunk of power play time.
Also, from an individual standpoint, he’s having a big year. Last year was the first year he played more than 68 games in a year and he should do it again this year being at 65 now. The Caps have 12 games left. Also, his 18 goals on the year is tied for a career-high and his 43 points is already one. Sometimes matches are made to workout and this one is a case of that to be sure. Fans will be more than excited to have Chychrun around for the next while.
