Capitals Recall Mike Sgarbossa From Hershey, Place Matt Roy on IR

Sgarbossa appeared in 25 games for the Capitals last season.

The Washington Capitals have recalled center Mike Sgarbossa from the AHL's Hershey Bears while placing defenseman Matt Roy on injured reserve.

It's unclear why Sgarbossa is up with the big club, though it's possible that there is an injury up front for one of the centers. Sonny Milano is the team's only extra forward at the moment.

Sgarbossa, 32, has earned D.C.'s trust as a primary call-up as he's been a reliable veteran presence. He finished last year in Washington after being called up amid Evgeny Kuznetsov's departure. In 25 games, he picked up seven points.

Roy has missed the last six games with a lower-body injury that he suffered in the season opener. He can be activated at any time. He has been skating on his own, but has not yet joined the team for practice.
