Carlton Davis further confirms he won't be coming back to the Lions

Based on what he said about playing for Dan Campbell , it seemed possible Carlton Davis would be back with the Detroit Lions as he hit free agency. But reality said he would and should see what else is out there, and it's always been possible he'd be able to get more than the Lions would be able to pay.

Carlton Davis further confirms he won't be coming back to the Lions

Davis more recently sent a message to his free agent suitors on Twitter.

Davis' social media message was followed by reporting from Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press that the Lions are "looking to spend less" than what Davis stands to command on the open market ($12-$14 million per year).

Carlton Davis makes it very clear he won't be coming back to the Lions

Davis was last a free agent in 2022. He signed at three-year deal to go back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and talking with Michael Silver of The Athletic this weekend he clearly has regret about that first foray as a free agent.

“I feel like last time, I just kind of panicked,” Davis said. “I was younger, and my mindset was, ‘I need to go ahead and just choose.’ At the time, the thinking was, ‘This is the offer, and the more you wait, the more that number’s gonna go down.’ Yeah, that can happen, but teams know your value, and right now I’m playing my best football."

Then Davis re-confirmed where his priority will be this time around.

“This time, I ain’t gonna settle for less."

Davis also told Silver he doesn't think the Lions will make an aggressive effort to bring him back, which tracks with Birkett's report. He said he wants to be paid like a “top 10 or top 15 cornerback" in the league. The 10th-highest paid corner in the league right now (L'Jarius Sneed) averages $19.1 million per year in his contract with the Tennessee Titans.

Silver mentioned the New York Jets (with the tie to former Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn) and the New England Patriots as prominent suitors for Davis, but there will be others. If there was any remaining doubt about Davis coming back to the Lions or not, it has been put to bed now with more of his own words.
