Celtics Expected To Sign Best Passing Big in College Basketball

The Boston Celtics are set to finalize their roster construction with the expected signing of Amari Williams — the 46th overall pick who assistant GM Mike Zarren called the “best passing big man in college basketball.”

The Williams Profile

Williams isn’t your typical late second-round pick. The former Kentucky standout boasts a rare 7-foot-6 wingspan that instantly caught Boston’s attention.

“He’s one of the best passing big men in college for a long time,” Zarren said after the draft. “When you meet him, you’ll see that he has an enormous, enormous wingspan.”

In his final season at Kentucky, Williams averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists on 56% shooting. While the numbers don’t leap off the page, his defensive instincts and passing ability make him an intriguing fit in Joe Mazzulla’s system.

The 6-foot-10 big man will join OG Anunoby and Jeremy Sochan as the only active British-born players in the NBA.

Perfect Fit in Boston

His arrival comes at the right time for a Celtics team dealing with frontcourt turnover. With Al Horford, Luke Kornet, and Kristaps Porzingis all gone, Boston’s rotation has meaningful minutes up for grabs.

Williams will slot into a big-man group featuring Neemias Queta, Luka Garza, Xavier Tillman, and Chris Boucher. Even on a two-way deal, he could carve out real playing time next season.

He’ll likely join Max Shulga and RJ Luis Jr. as Boston’s two-way players, alongside first-round pick Hugo Gonzalez as part of the team’s developmental core.

What’s Next for the Celtics?

Williams is expected to officially sign in the coming days. He gives Boston a unique blend of length, passing, and defensive versatility to work with in Maine and on the main roster.

In a league where depth matters more than ever. The Celtics may have found a late-second-round gem. One who could contribute sooner than expected.
