Defensive tackle Charles Omenihu is one of Kansas City's top players who is set to hit free agency next week.
The Chiefs obviously have one of the best DTs in the NFL in Chris Jones, but the only other guys at the position who they currently have under contract for next season are Fabien Lovett and Siaki Ika, who are very unproven commodities.
Despite that, it seems as though K.C. is going to be willing to let Omenihu test the free agent market. Omenihu took to X on Thursday to post a couple of cryptic messages regarding his future.
You can never be fully certain when it comes to social media posts, but that sure doesn't sound like Omenihu plans to be back with the Chiefs. It is unknown if they've had negotiations but are far apart on terms, or if K.C. simply doesn't have any interest in bringing him back.
Things can change quickly when it comes to free agency, so never say never. If Omenihu has played his final snap with the Chiefs, his time with the team will be remembered as a rollercoaster ride. He played well when available, recording 46 total tackles, 10 sacks, 19 quarterback pressures, and five forced fumbles in 23 games played (including the postseason).
However, Omenihu missed an entire season's worth of games during his two-year tenure in K.C. In 2023 he was suspended for the first six games for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Later that year, he tore his ACL during the AFC Championship Game, which cost him the first 11 games of the 2024 season.
Moving forward, Omenihu can fully concentrate on football since he is now healthy and doesn't have a suspension looming over his head. Still just 27-years-old, he should have a lot of good football left in him. Omenihu will definitly have a market for his services, but will likely have to accept a short-term deal. If he can have a big year in 2025 and stay on the field, he'll have an opportunity at a multi-year contract.
