Quite literally, the Boston Bruins are a different team than they were yesterday.
General manager Don Sweeney detonated the Bruins roster, shipping out several core players at the trade deadline on Friday, including captain and franchise staple Brad Marchand.
Contrary to reports that Marchand, who has been out of the lineup with injury since Saturday, was likely to stay through the trade deadline, Sweeney shipped him off to an Atlantic Division foe in the Florida Panthers in stunning fashion as the news broke following the 3 p.m. ET cutoff.
The return for the Bruins is unknown at the time of this publish.
Marchand, 37, has been vocal about wanting to finish his career in Boston. It is still a possibility that he can return in the coming offseason as an unrestricted free agent.
In addition to the Boston captain's departure, Sweeney shipped off Trent Frederic to the Edmonton Oilers, Charlie Coyle to the Colorado Avalanche and Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Following the deadline, Bruins stalwart defenseman Charlie McAvoy, who is also out with injury, posted to his Instagram story with a series of four photos of him and each of the traded players.
The last photo featured both him and Marchand celebrating a goal while hugging each other. McAvoy added nothing but two broken heart emojis.
With Marchand's departure, it will mark the first time since 2003 that neither he, Patrice Bergeron or Zdeno Chara—the core three that won a Stanley Cup together in 2011—are on the roster.
As the Bruins sit three points outside a playoff spot with 18 games remaining, McAvoy is out indefinitely with a shoulder injury he sustained during the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament last month.
