The Kansas City Chiefs juggernaut keeps rolling after a blocked Will Lutz field goal attempt to win the game for the Denver Broncos saw Andy Reid's team move to 9-0 after outlasting their division rivals 16-14 at Arrowhead Stadium.
In what was a defensive slugfest, the Chiefs took the lead with a little over five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but Denver quarterback Bo Nix drove his team down deep into the Chiefs' territory to set up the game-winning field goal.
However, linebacker Leo Chanel got his hand up to block the attempt to keep the Chief's undefeated record intact.
While Reid was happy to win the game in the manner in which the Chiefs did, he wants things to be taken care of beforehand so they don't rely on a blocked field goal to close out the game.
“That was a spectacular way to end it,” Reid said. “I’m not sure I’ve ever had that experience in my career with a walk-off blocked field goal. It made it exciting, but I’d rather us really focus on taking care of business in the other part of the game. But my hat goes off to Toub [Dave Toub, special teams coordinator] for spending the time to make sure those things all fit together and for the players, just executing and never giving up.”
With the Chiefs now moving to 9-0, up next is a crucial AFC clash with the 8-2 Buffalo Bills in what will be a true test of this Kansas City team and could have potential playoff ramifications down the road.
As has been the case this season, while the Chiefs haven't played a complete game in which all three phases work together, when a play is there to be made, whether that be a third-down conversion on offense or a third-down stop on defense, to a special teams blocked field goal, this team has an uncanny knack of getting the job done.
Yes, it was a little too close for comfort, but rarely do you have a 9-0 team with ample room for improvement, and that should scare the rest of the NFL.
