Carson Wentz is encountering yet another adjustment in his career as he transitions to serving as the backup to star Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
The former Philadelphia Eagles star is fully embracing the change and playing in head coach Andy Reid's offense. When looking at the system, some of it is the same, while some of it is different.
And one thing that is for certain is that Reid's way works -- it's won the Chiefs two consecutive Super Bowls, after all.
Wentz says it's been a good experience to this point.
“Honestly, I love kind of just learning. The last couple of years I’ve gotten to learn a lot of different football, a lot of different playbooks," Wentz said. "So, I’ve loved diving into this and seeing the uniqueness of it... There’s a handful of similarities and carry over in some terminology but just kind of the whole evolution of it and how they’ve done some really cool things here with different pieces."
In terms of going through practice on a day-to-day basis, Wentz finds the environment to be nothing too far off from what he's been a part of before.
“I’d say it’s similar to what I’ve experienced. It’s just a mutual respect across the ball for each other and just how do we get better this time of year but also push each other but keep each other healthy, keep each other safe, you know, work together so to speak.
We’re not the enemy of each other even though it may feel that way in some team competitive drills. Competition is high out there, but guys really maintain it and kind of keep it between the whistles all that stuff, so it’s been pretty good.”
How well things pan out for Wentz will be something to keep an eye on in perhaps the most important backup position that exists in the NFL right now.
