Chiefs Major Signing Not Enough To Ease Fears At 1 Position

The Kansas City Chiefs might have signed San Francisco 49ers backup left tackle Jaylon Moore as Patrick Mahomes' new blindside protector, but that doesn't mean the position is fixed.

Many doubt the signing, with NFL Network's Brian Baldinger calling it a "band-aid" move for the franchise. Behind Moore, Kingsley Suamataia and Wanya Morris couldn't nail down the starting role last season.

Suamataia is expected to shift inside to guard to fill the hole left by Joe Thuney who is now with the Chicago Bears, which leaves Morris as the backup.

Does that inspire confidence? For The 33rd Team's Kyle Crabbs, it doesn't, and the Chiefs take Texas tackle Kelvin Banks in his latest mock draft.

"Kansas City got aggressive with another big-money free agent contract for its offensive line when it signed Jaylon Moore," Crabbs writes. "However, the last time the Chiefs got upstaged in the Super Bowl as they did by Philadelphia, they overinvested in the group to ensure they had the horses needed to fix the unit. They added Joe Thuney, Creed Humphrey, and Trey Smith…all in the same offseason. After moving on from Thuney, the Chiefs are more than just an ambitious contract to Moore away from righting the ship up front."

Could Moore be seen as a stop-gap? Possibly and when we factor in that Jaylon has only 12 starts to his name in four seasons, that might also play a role in the Chiefs adding another tackle in the draft.

Mahomes was sacked 47 times last season (including playoffs), which was the most of his career, and yes, the Super Bowl loss shone a bright light on the offensive line's inability to protect their star, and one free agency signing doesn't fix the position.

Even with Moore's signing, the Chiefs still don't feel confident about the left tackle spot, and in Banks, Kansas City might be looking at Jaylon's replacement in 12 short months.
