Chiefs Make Another Move at QB on Roster Cutdown Day

The Chiefs will move forward with only two quarterbacks on the active roster following the news that they released Chris Oladokun, who is a priority practice squad addition should he make it through waivers.

Oladokun is entering his third season with Kansas City, provided he does indeed stay on the practice squad, and played a valuable role imitating Lamar Jackson in anticipation of last year's AFC Championship win.

With Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz locked in at the QB position and a number of needs at other positions, the Chiefs are continuing their typical strategy of only dressing two signal callers on game day.

Chiefs News: KC Releases QB Chris Oladokun

He had a solid yet unspectacular preseason, completing 66.7% of his passes for 250 yards (7.6 yards per attempt) with one TD and two interceptions. Oladokun has steadily developed in his two years with the organization, yet he's still clearly the inferior backup to players like Wentz.

That doesn't mean he's not important. In the disastrous event that both Mahomes and Wentz suffered injuries, Oladokun would be trusted to dress in a pinch. If another team poaches him from waivers, Brett Veach and Andy Reid would need to quickly identify an emergency option in free agency or trade.

In all likelihood, Oladokun will pass through waivers successfully and be back on the Chiefs in short order. The 2022 seventh-round pick out of Pittsburgh has proven capable of filling his role, and Kansas City doesn't want to go QB-hunting while they're trying to focus on Baltimore.

That first game being against the Ravens gives Oladokun an edge too. He already mimicked Jackson once, so it's reasonable to think the coaching staff would ask him to do it once again.

Expect this to be a minor setback with Oladokun returning to the practice squad shortly.
