Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is developing quite the connection with one of his newest weapons during OTAs. Their latest play during practice should put the rest of the league on red alert.
During the first week of OTAs, Mahomes combined with WR Marquise "Hollywood" Brown for a highlight reel play. However, that play occurred vs. air with no defenders. The latest highlight-reel play between the new QB-WR duo happened during team drills, which should excite the entire Chiefs Kingdom.
The play also happened to come during practice on Tuesday, June 4, which is Brown's birthday. Check it out down below.
"Threw me a good bday gift today," Brown wrote on X. "Thank Yall."
Brown beat veteran CB Kelvin Joseph in 1-on-1 coverage on a deep route. It's not like the former Dallas Cowboys second-round pick is having a bad offseason in Kansas City either. He has been working with the first-team and second-team defense regularly and was tabbed as a standout by several reporters just last week. He even got an interception off of Mahomes during the practice open to the media last week.
This play truly is more indicative of two things:
1. How the Chiefs are eager to bring back the deep ball to the offense.
2. The growing chemistry between Patrick Mahomes and Hollywood Brown.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid had this to say about the duo back in Week 1 of OTAs:
"You guys (the media) got a chance to see it for the first time today. Hollywood does a nice job out there as a receiver. It looks like he and Pat (Mahomes) are developing a nice little chemistry there. We’ll just take it step by step as we go."
Mahomes also indicated the team is making a major effort to get the deep passing game right after it was virtually non-existent during the 2023 NFL season. Practice makes perfect in that regard, and they sure seem to be practicing deep shot plays during OTAs.
