Chiefs release recent free agent addition to sign a standout Division II UDFA rookie minicamp tryout who defied the odds

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves following the conclusion of their rookie minicamp on Monday.

Chiefs release recent free agent addition to sign a standout Division II UDFA rookie minicamp tryout who defied the odds

As Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick first reported, Kansas City released CB Robert Rochell from the 90-man offseason roster. A fourth-round pick out of Central Arkansas in 2021, Rochell was a March 21 free agent signing for the Chiefs. He was expected to play a role on special teams, but it seems he was simply a placeholder for a player waiting to impress during his rookie minicamp tryout.

But who did the Chiefs add from the rookie minicamp roster to replace him?

Chiefs sign Division II standout Major Williams after successful 2025 rookie minicamp tryout

After a successful tryout with the Chiefs, the team offered Carson-Newman safety Major Williams a contract. Rochell's dismissal cleared a spot on the 90-man offseason roster. The signing of Williams will bring the roster up to a full 90 players once more.

Chiefs Digest's Matt Derrick named Williams as a rookie minicamp standout on the 41 is the Mic podcast with KSHB-TV producer Nick Jacobs.

"The one I had that differed was Safety Major Williams from Carson-Newman, mostly because he was around the ball a lot," Derrick said. "He had an interception on Sunday. I can't remember if he had one on Saturday, too, or if he was close to one. But again, I just like guys who have a knack for the ball, can get around it, and can get their hands on it, and he did that a couple of times, so I was impressed."

A transfer from the University of Virginia, Williams finished his three-year career with the Eagles with All-SAC First-Team honors to go along with 155 tackles, four interceptions, two fumble recoveries, 30 pass breakups, and four defensive touchdowns. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 198 pounds, Williams showcased elite athleticism during his Pro Day workout, boasting 20 repetitions of 225 on the bench, a 4.4s 40-yard dash, a 37-inch vertical, a 125-inch broad jump, a 4.08s short shuttle, and a 6.9s three-cone time.

He joins veteran CB Josh Williams and rookie CB Nohl Williams as the third Williams in the defensive secondary in Kansas City.
