Chiefs safety Justin Reid is entering his final season on the three-year contract he signed and it sounds like he's keen for an extension if Kansas City is open to another deal.
Speaking to the media following Sunday's practice, Reid praised the organization and noted how much he loves playing for the franchise. He's fully healthy going into Week 1 against the Ravens despite the injury he suffered in training camp, a major boost to what should be one of the NFL's best defenses once again.
Brett Veach has notably never given a contract extension to a player in the secondary. Could Reid be the first?
Justin Reid Breaks Silence on Upcoming Contract Negotiations
When asked about his upcoming negotiations, Reid said the Chiefs are "a first-class organization." He said he loves Kansas City, the team, and the culture they've built. While "the contract details will work themselves out," it's hard to imagine Reid back with the team unless he takes a big discount.
Reid has the fifth-highest cap hit on the roster in 2024 at over $14 million. He's only 27 years old and has a proven track record as a beloved vocal leader both on and off the field. His next contract could be the largest he ever signs given his age, though it's unclear whether the Chiefs will be willing to pay his asking price.
Kansas City drafted Brian Cook and Jaden Hicks over the last couple of seasons, presumably to eventually take over Reid's role. Unless he's willing to take a discount, Reid very well might be auditioning for his next team this year.
During his two seasons with the team, Reid has 178 tackles, 14 deflected passes, and four sacks while appearing in 33 games. He's won two Super Bowls in the process and could be on his way to a third.
Veach has difficult decisions to make about the construction of the roster moving forward. Whether or not Reid is part of the future will have ripple effects felt throughout the organization.
