Every rookie wants to have a debut to remember, and Kansas City Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy had one of the best.
In the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, Worthy faced one of the best defenses in football, but it didn't matter.
On his very first touch, on an end-around play where he got a little toss from Patrick Mahomes in the back field, Worthy raced away, weaving in and out of traffic before hitting the accelerator for a 21-yard touchdown.
It was the stuff of dreams.
"It was crazy," Worthy said. "We ran that in the preseason, I fumbled, so it was kind of bad, but just for them to have that trust in me, and I told Coach Nagy I think this play is going to score, and it happened. So it just amazing moment, my first touch being a touchdown in [the] NFL."
Worthy's first NFL touch was a warning for the Ravens defense that if Xavier gets the ball in his hands out in open space, it equals danger.
But they didn't heed the warning.
Worthy was given all kinds of space in the fourth quarter after a blown assignment from the Ravens defense, and the rookie walked in a 35-yard touchdown to extend the Chiefs' lead.
Worthy stated that his NFL debut was everything he dreamed of and after having such an impact on the game, against a stellar defense, the rest of the league must be shifting nervously in their seats at the prospect of trying to curtail the speed merchant.
It was a debut to remember for Worthy, and now the rest of the NFL knows what kind of menace they have to try and stop if they are to slay the Chiefs.
Good luck.
