Cleveland Browns’ Bold QB Plans Leak Before 2025 NFL Draft

As the Cleveland Browns approach a critical juncture with quarterback Deshaun Watson, his future with the team remains highly uncertain.

Despite being under a massive contract, recent reports suggest Watson may have played his last game for the Browns.

Early 3-Round 2025 mock draft sees Browns cut losses and replace Deshaun Watson

Deshaun Watson Hopeful for ‘Comeback’ Season

According to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, Watson is “determined to make a comeback” as he recovers from his second Achilles tear.

Despite his determination, the three-time Pro Bowler’s future is overshadowed by his recent injury history and underwhelming performance, where he has averaged fewer than 200 yards per game in 19 starts over the last three seasons.

The financial implications of moving on from Watson are substantial. Designating him as a post-June 1 cut in 2026 would incur $72.9 million in dead money next year, plus an additional $26.9 million in 2027.

This daunting financial hit positions the Browns at a crossroads: continue with Watson potentially as a backup or release him and absorb the significant financial impact.

Cleveland Brown to Leverage NFL Draft for QB?

ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently indicated that there is a “strong chance” Watson will not return to play for Cleveland, citing a widespread belief within the NFL that the Browns are poised to use their No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft on a top quarterback prospect, either Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders.

This move could significantly shift the team’s strategy away from Watson, who has struggled with performance and injuries.

The Browns’ decision-making will be closely watched as they navigate these challenges. With the potential drafting of a quarterback like Ward or Sanders, it seems increasingly likely that Cleveland is preparing to pivot away from Watson and rejuvenate its quarterback lineup.
