Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has made a name for himself in his first NFL season. With a 6-2 record so far, the No. 2 overall pick already helped the team eclipse last year’s win total of four.
On Thursday, the NFL recognized his Week 8 performance against the Chicago Bears, naming him the Pepsi Zero Sugar Rookie of the Week.
In his first meeting against No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams, Daniels threw a 52-yard, game-winning Hail Mary to grab an 18-15 victory. He completed 21-of-38 passes for 326 yards and one touchdown. On the ground, he ran eight times for 52 yards.
The Commanders' social media team had some fun announcing their young star quarterback won the award for the sixth time this season. They declared the award would have a new name moving forward.
“The Jayden Daniels Award,” they wrote.
In just eight games, Daniels has accumulated 1,736 passing yards, seven touchdowns and just two interceptions. On top of that, he’s rushed for 424 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback started his college football journey at Arizona State, where he played for three years, before transferring to LSU for his last two.
In his final season, he won the Heisman Trophy, the annual award given to the best college football player in the country.
Daniels and the Commanders will travel to New York on Sunday to face the Giants. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Fox.
