Back Together Sunday had a special significance for the Washington Commanders.

Commanders fans finally got the Terry McLaurin update they've craved

Terry McLaurin is back in the fold, albeit without a new deal.

McLaurin caused a stir by reporting for training camp after initially staying away from the team as he awaits a new contract. Considering the wide receiver stated that it would be difficult to show up for practices unless progress was being made regarding an extension, all signs point to some middle ground being reached in the not-too-distant future.

So, instead of holding out, McLaurin linked back up with his teammates. However, any fans hoping to see the team's most gifted pass-catcher on the practice field were out of luck.

Terry McLaurin ending his holdout suggests new Commanders extension is close

The Commanders placed McLaurin on the physically unable to perform list with an ankle complication. Dan Quinn revealed that the former third-round pick out of Ohio State will work on the sidelines with trainers, but nothing more. The head coach was also thrilled to get one of his franchise cornerstones into the mix after a lengthy saga.

On the business side, AP [Adam Peters] and the guys are still working hard with Terry [McLaurin] and his rep on the business side of things. While on PUP, just like we do with the other guys, he'll be working with the trainers to get back as soon as he can. The same scenario with Sam Cosmi, on the side.Dan Quinn

This is fantastic news. McLaurin is an indispensable member of the squad. He's a two-time Pro Bowler and a second-team All-Pro. He's also an exceptional leadership presence on and off the field, which often gets overlooked, but is no less important.

Adam Peters is still in talks to find a deal that works for the player and the franchise. McLaurin's latest move represents an act of good faith, especially considering speculation was building around a potential trade request to force the issue even further.

McLaurin went the other way. He cares about the organization deeply and wants to be part of this exciting project. Getting fined $50,000 per day wasn't ideal, but it's a sacrifice the wideout was willing to make in pursuit of raising urgency regarding another long-term commitment.

Even though McLaurin won't be practicing, his mere presence gave everyone a substantial boost. This ongoing situation has already become a distraction the Commanders could have done without. Ending his holdout doesn't change the end goal, but it does diminish everyone's concerns.

And once McLaurin gets his money, it wouldn't be a surprise to see his ankle injury magically heal.
