The Washington Commanders are desperate for a receiving partner opposite Terry McLaurin. Cooper Kupp is available after recently asking for a trade from the Los Angeles Rams.
This one just makes too much sense.
Cupp best operates in the slot, where Washington needs help. He is a Super Bowl champion, Super Bowl MVP, Offensive Player of the Year and he's led the NFL in both receptions and touchdowns.
Those achievements came in 2021 and Kupp will turn 32 during next season, but ...
We're not the only ones connecting the dots, as the Commanders are among the betting favorites to acquire him along with the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos and Detroit Lions.
As Commanders' general manager continues to add weapons for star quarterback Jayden Daniels, Kupp is a viable option.
Kupp is, however, in decline from his star-studded peak. He caught 145 passes in 2021, but since has managed 75, 59 and 67. He caught 16 touchdowns in 2021, but only 17 in the last three seasons combined.
He's suffered injuries in the last three seasons. Peters must decide how much is left in the tank, and what the fair compensation is for what - relatively speaking - would be a short-term solution to the Commanders' receiving problem.
Entering this offseason the Commanders are armed with seven draft picks and approximately $80 million in salary cap space.
