Commanders In Running To Sign 3-Time Pro Bowl Pass Rusher

The Washington Commanders sent a loud signal to the NFL to start the offseason. Do they have another trick up their sleeve at the end?

First, Deebo Samuel. Now ... Jadeveon Clowney?

Commanders general manager Adam Peters achieved  his object this offseason of getting plenty of help for star quarterback Jayden Daniels. The team traded for a Pro Bowl-quality left tackle in Laremy Tunsil and then selected Oregon offensive lineman Josh Conerly with the 29th overall pick in April's draft.

According to CBS Sports, the Commanders and New England Patriots could be in line to sign Clowney. After a productive season in which he made 46 tackles and had a team-high 5.5 sacks for the Carolina  Panthers, they released him this offseason to clear room under the salary cap.

Clowney, 32, will be in his 12th season but still seems to have plenty of gas in the tank as a situational pass-rusher.

Enter the Commanders, who lost leading sacker Dante Fowler to the Dallas Cowboys in free agency.

"I think I played well for Carolina [last] year, considering the circumstances that ... unfolded for me," Clowney said after his release from the Panthers. "I played with a bunch of guys that was hurt this past year. And I ended up playing extremely well for them. So it is what it is. I can play the game. I can play football. There are 31 other teams. I just hope another team gives me that opportunity so I can prove myself again. I feel like I can do that."

Clowney has made three Pro Bowls and stayed healthy the last two years, playing in 31 games.
