Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels’ Rookie of the Year candidacy is at risk after recent performances and a lingering rib injury.
The Washington Commanders’ standout rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels finds himself at a crossroads in his pursuit of the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year title. Despite an impressive start to his debut season, Daniels’ recent performances, paired with a lingering rib injury sustained in Week 7, have raised concerns about his durability and production.
In Washington's recent 26-18 loss to the division-leading Philadelphia Eagles, Daniels completed 22 of 32 passes for 191 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He also added 18 rushing yards, but his inability to capitalize in critical moments, including a late fourth-down stop at the Eagles’ 25-yard line, highlighted the challenges the rookie faces.
Since his injury, Daniels’ numbers have taken a sharp decline. His completion percentage dropped from 75.3 to 59.5, while his passer rating slipped from 107.1 to 89.6. On the ground, his rushing average fell from 53.6 yards per game to just 27.5.
Meanwhile, Denver Broncos quarterback Bo Nix has surged into contention for the award. Nix’s 307-yard, four-touchdown performance in a 38-6 win over the Atlanta Falcons showcased his efficiency and leadership. On the season, Nix boasts 2,275 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, six interceptions, and 295 rushing yards, keeping Denver competitive at 6-5.
Heading into a pivotal Week 12 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Daniels remains a key factor in the Commanders' success. With Washington looking to rebound from their two-game skid, Daniels has an opportunity to solidify his Offensive Rookie of the Year candidacy and keep the Commanders in playoff contention. A strong performance against the Cowboys could serve as a turning point in both the race for postseason positioning and his bid for top rookie honors.
