The Washington Commanders fell just short in a 34-26 thriller against the Dallas Cowboys at Northwest Stadium in Week 12. Despite a late surge highlighted by an 86-yard touchdown reception by Terry McLaurin, kicking woes throughout the game proved costly.
McLaurin led Washington’s offense with five receptions for 102 yards, including the fourth-quarter touchdown that narrowed the deficit to one point.
Rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels delivered a mixed performance, throwing for 274 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while adding a team-leading 74 rushing yards and a score. Kicker Austin Siebert sent 2/3 on field goals and 0-2 on extra points.
The late-game drama unfolded when Seibert missed the extra point to follow up McLaurin’s 86-yard touchdown. The attempt could have tied the game 27-27 with seconds remaining. Seibert took full responsibility.
“Didn’t make a difference at all... It’s on me,” said Seibert when asked about the low snap.
Reflecting on his overall performance.
“Just wasn’t striking well. It means a lot for me to be here with these guys. Just want to put my best foot moving forward.” an emotional Seibert added.
Punter Tress Way, reflecting on the operation during the miss.
“It’s just a tough spot to be. I feel like I could’ve caught it a little cleaner, and put it down nice. You always wonder what you could do differently.” said Way post-game.
Despite the loss, Washington’s offense outperformed Dallas, amassing 411 total yards compared to the Cowboys’ 332. However, four sacks and two turnovers undermined their efforts. The Cowboys capitalized with efficient scoring, including a decisive 99-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter.
The loss extends Washington’s losing streak to three games, dropping their record to 7-5. Despite their offensive firepower, key mistakes in critical moments continue to plague the team. As they regroup, the Commanders must shift their focus to a crucial Week 13 matchup against the 3-8 Tennessee Titans.
With playoff hopes still within reach, Washington will look to correct their special teams errors and build on the positive performances from players like Terry McLaurin and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels to avoid letting this skid derail their postseason aspirations.
