Should the Commanders make a name change?
Since the Josh Harris group took over as owners of the Washington Commanders, there has been speculation that eventually the franchise's name could change once again, but his wive, Marjorie Harris commented on the name, indicating that a change is not on the way.
“As you would imagine everybody has an opinion about the name,” Marjorie Harris said, via Ben Standig of The Athletic. “Some good, some bad, some in the middle, and I think that we have a lot of work to do and so that name issue is gonna be on the side for now until we can get things going. Quite frankly, I had a whole day out in the community, and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders. And you know what? Sounds pretty good to me. So, for now, it's the Commanders.”
The last sentence including “for now” means that eventually, a name change can not be ruled out, but that does not mean there will be any news on that front anytime soon. The Commanders have played two seasons with their current name, which was instituted for the 2022 season, before the Harris group took over. In 2020 and 2021, the franchise had the placeholder name of the Washington Football Team, moving away from the Redskins name.
The Commanders name does not have much history behind it, and the Harris group was not responsible for it, so it would be reasonable to think that the new ownership group could want to decide on its own name, especially considering that the new name is not very popular among fans, according to The Washington Post. Marjorie Harris indicates that there are other priorities. Regardless of the name, the most important thing is the on-field product, and making sure the new regime led by Adam Peters and Dan Quinn is successful.
Commanders hope to move in right direction in 2024
The Commanders moved on from Ron Rivera last season, and have brought in Adam Peters and Dan Quinn to lead the franchise in a new direction. The franchise had the No. 2 pick, where it selected Jayden Daniels to hopefully be the quarterback of the future. There were other important decisions made in the offseason, but none more important than the decision to draft Jayden Daniels.
Quinn hired Kliff Kingsbury as the offensive play caller for Daniels in his rookie season. Kingsbury has mixed reviews going back to his days as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals working with Kyler Murray. Kingsbury is one of the most important members of the organization as he hopes to set Daniels up for success as a rookie due to Quinn's defensive background.
Adam Peters has a good reputation from his days with the San Francisco 49ers, and he hopes to replicate even just a fraction of the success they have had in recent years.
