Commanders' patience finally pays off in explosive 2026 mock draft move

The Washington Commanders didn't select an edge rusher during the 2025 NFL Draft. That was a contentious issue among the fanbase, but one analyst believes this could be Adam Peters' biggest priority when next year's selection event rolls around.

Commanders' patience finally pays off in explosive 2026 mock draft move

Peters played his board rather than focusing too much on need. That leaves the Commanders short of dependable pass-rushers, so it'll be interesting to see what the general manager has up his sleeve before Week 1 rolls around.

Although the 2025 draft has barely concluded, that hasn't stopped those in the media from speculating who could potentially enter first-round consideration in 2026. The cycle never stops, not for writers or those working behind the scenes in Washington's front office.

Commanders secure edge rusher Matayo Uiagalelei in ESPN's 2026 mock draft

Jordan Reid from ESPN had the Commanders picking at No. 26 overall in his early 2026 mock draft, which is based on current Super Bowl odds. The up-and-coming analyst had Washington selecting Oregon pass-rusher Matayo Uiagalelei, who brings the explosiveness, size, and versatility that Dan Quinn typically looks for.

Edge rusher is a clear weak spot on the Commanders' roster. Uiagalelei took a major step forward as a sophomore in 2024, with 10.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. At 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, he is a versatile edge rusher who already has an established repertoire of pass-rush moves. Coach Dan Quinn would love him rushing the passer in D.C.Jordan Reid

A lot can (and will) happen before the 2026 draft. Prospects will rise or fall based on their college production and subsequent testing. The Commanders' needs will change. The ever-changing landscape with NIL means prospects like Uiagalelei might not even come out at the first time of asking.

If Uiagalelei does declare, he'll be a hot commodity, providing he can build on a sensational 2024 campaign with the Ducks. He emerged as one of the most dynamic pass-rushers in college football, accumulating 10.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss as Oregon secured the No. 1 playoff seed. His first step is devastating, which is matched by a speed-to-power move that is incredibly difficult to stop once early momentum is generated.

Growing throughout the season is key. The Commanders (and everyone else around the league) will be watching his progress closely. If the necessary development arrives and he helps Oregon to another outstanding campaign, there's a good chance he might not even be around by this point.

There are so many unknowns and a lot of football left to play. What cannot be denied is that the Commanders need a franchise-caliber edge rusher in the worst way. Uiagalelei could be exactly that if everything goes well in the coming months.
