Commanders Poised To Enter NFL Draft With 1-Word Focus

The Washington Commanders have positioned themselves well ahead of the NFL Draft

The Washington Commanders wasted no time in adding to their roster once the new league year began.

Fresh off a 12-5 regular season and a playoff run that lasted until the NFC Championship game, the Commanders, with Jayden Daniels leading the charge, are one of the teams to beat in 2025.

Then we added in the trades for Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil early in free agency, which upgraded two crucial positions, and Washington is in great shape ahead of the draft in Green Bay.

"We've given ourselves optionality to pick anywhere," general manager Peters said. "I don't think we have a philosophy of going for 'premium positions' in any round."

"Optionality'' is quite a 1-word framing.

And ... That is quite the position to be in for Washington.

With the offense set with the trades for Samuel and Tunsil, many think defense is where the franchise will look in the first round, particularly at edge with Dante Fowler Jr., who led the team in sacks last season (10.5), now with the Dallas Cowboys.

Given that Joe Whitt Jr.'s defense struggled at times last year, there is a thought that in the first couple of rounds, it could be a defensive run for Washington. However, as Peters stated, the franchise is in a position where it doesn't necessarily need to draft a premium position.

With only five draft picks, which is a far cry from the 10 last season, the Commanders will have to be very selective with their choices as they look to take another leap under Dan Quinn and Daniels in Year 2.
