The Washington Commanders are welcoming back a familiar face to the roster. They have announced they are re-signing quarterback Josh Johnson to a one-year deal. Johnson was last with the team in 2018.
Johnson made three starts for the Commanders and also spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens backing up Lamar Jackson. He took 36 snaps in mop up duty over six appearances. In fact, his lone NFL win came as a member of the Commanders.
The word journeyman clearly applies to Johnson. Since entering the league in 2008 as a fifth-round draft choice, he has spent parts of seasons with nearly half of the league. He has played for 14 teams. He also played with the Sacramento Mountain Lions in the now defunct American Alliance of Football and the also defunct XFL. He has also taken snaps in the United Football League.
Johnson will fit in as the third quarterback for Dan Quinn's team, behind starter Jayden Daniels and backup Marcus Mariota. Mariota has agreed to a one-year deal last month after testing free agency.
Johnson has played in 45 career games with nine starts. He has amassed 2,297 yards with 13 touchdowns and 16 interceptions.
The quarterback from the University of San Diego has earned more than $12 million throughout his journey through the league. He made $1.4 million with the Ravens last season.
Terms of his deal with the Commanders have not been released as of yet, but it is more than likely a veteran minimum deal similar to what he had in Baltimore with the Ravens last season. … all part of a Jayden insurance policy.
