Commanders Signing Try for 2 Superstar Pass-Rushers Reveals Major Need
The Washington Commanders were clearly looking for help at the edge this offseason and pursued two of the best free agents available at the position.
Over the course of the NFL's first-wave period of free agency, the Washington Commanders reportedly pursued heavily both Joey Bosa and DeMarcus Lawrence, who would ultimately sign with the Buffalo Bills and Seattle Seahawks, respectively.
What does that mean?
Call it an admission of a roster hole in DC.
Lawrence made the most sense due to the fact the former Dallas Cowboys star was coached in Dallas by Dan Quinn, who was his defensive coordinator. Quinn coached him for three seasons and is now the head coach here.
Bosa jumped from the Chargers to a Bills team that thinks he can be a final puzzle piece to a Super Bowl.
Washington lost its top pass rusher, Dante Fowler, who went back to the Cowboys during free agency. He signed a one-year, $6 million deal after not garnering much attention from the Commanders.
And of course, we all know the Commanders made overtures at trying to trade for 17.5 sack phenom Trey Hendrickson of the Bengals.
The team invested their money in the defensive tackle position. They re-signed Clelin Ferrell and added depth to the position by signing Jacob Martin, Deatrich Wise and Jalyn Holmes.
Our prediction?
Look for Super Bowl-contending Washington to get interested in free agents before training camp starts. They could also work a trade for an edge rusher who could start opposite Dorance Armstrong. ... and why do we suspect that?
Because Washington's failed attempts are an admission.
