The Washington Commanders are making a switch at kicker. The franchise signed Matt Gay to a one-year deal and released Zane Gonzalez in a corresponding move on Tuesday.
Gonzalez played nine games for the Commanders last season, including the playoffs. He converted 12 of 15 field goals, including a game-winning kick off the upright as time expired in the wild-card matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Before signing with the Commanders to replace the injured Austin Seibert, Gonzalez had been out of the NFL for two years.
Gay’s contract is reportedly a fully guaranteed one-year deal worth more than $4.25 million. No kicker in NFL history has earned more money on a one-year contract.
Gay, 31, converted 31 of 37 field goals for the Indianapolis Colts last season. He was a perfect 33-for-33 on extra-point attempts in his second and final year in Indianapolis.
The Utah product started his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before signing with the Los Angeles Rams, where he became a Pro Bowler in 2021. He has connected on 85.5% of his field goal attempts across six seasons.
