The Miami Dolphins are looking for a trade partner for Pro Bowl cornerback Jalen Ramsey. And on paper?
The Washington Commanders - simply because under GM Adam Peters they are very much in go-for-it mode while benefiting from the cheap rookie contract of star QB Jayden Daniels - made for a logical partner.
Ramsey would fit in nicely here not only as part of the defensive backfield but also as a part of head coach Dan Quinn's overall scheme.
But the far-fetched part of this idea, which the Dolphins would likely be fine with, is about the details ... and the devil in those details.
First to the report, and some skepticism about its validity.
It comes from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler who on Friday reported that the Dolphins are engaged with multiple teams on a Ramsey trade …
And then Fowler named the Dallas Cowboys, the Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders as potential suitors.
Fowler’s “reporting'' here frankly comes across as highly speculative; so take the DC connection with a block of salt.
The idea comes with a considerable pile of baggage ... which is of course why Miami is willing to dump a very good player even though the Dolphins signed Ramsey to a three-year extension just last season for $72 million.
Ah, that $72 million. Now that’s now a problem.
Ramsey has not asked for the trade; this is all about Dolphins general manager Chris Grier being very open about the financial ramifications openly announcing that he would be seeking to trade Ramsey sooner than later.
Ramsey has said lately he would be desirous of being traded to a Super Bowl contender. The Commanders would check that box as they vaulted into the NFC Championship Game a year ago and view themselves now as a legit threat to the Super Bowl champion Phildelphia Eagles not only in the NFC East but also beyond.
It is possible that if the trade were to happen, Ramsey would represent the final piece of the puzzle to get the Commanders past the Eagles and finally back into making a Super Bowl appearance, something they have not accomplished in over decades.
But ESPN's report aside ... a lot of baggage stands in the way.
