The Washington Commanders have been urged to go big this offseason and land a key offensive weapon.
The Washington Commanders will once again enter the offseason armed with a war chest of salary cap space to fill out the roster with.
With roughly $78 million available, which is also for re-signing players already on the roster, the Commanders have been urged to go big again to take advantage of Jayden Daniels' rookie contract.
We have heard the Tee Higgins thoughts, and that would be a great piece of business for general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn. But is there a bigger move Washington could make?
As it turns out, there is.
Bleacher Reports Moe Moton has suggested the Miami Dolphins trade Tyreek Hill to the Commanders.
"Miami may consider trading Hill for a combination of draft picks," Moton writes. "Remember, the speedy wideout will turn 31 in March and plans to retire after the 2026 season. The Dolphins can move Hill before it's too late, and the Commanders could be a landing spot. Jayden Daniels put together one of the best rookie campaigns ever for a quarterback and did it with one reliable wide receiver, Terry McLaurin. He could make strides from 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year to an MVP candidate with an elite deep threat of Hill's caliber.”
Right, so there's a bit to work through here.
Moton mentioned in his piece on Hill that he wants to be a Dolphin in 2025. So there's that. Plus, he's guaranteed $27.6 million this upcoming season, too.
Now, the trade from a Miami point of view is interesting. Per Over The Cap, if the Dolphins traded Hill post-June 1, the franchise would get $14.9 million in cap savings and only have $12.7 million in dead money. But anything prior to that, and the Dolphins are in trouble.
Cutting Hill is out of the question with $55.9 million of dead money (pre-June 1) and $40 million (post-June 1). Even a trade pre-June 1, would leave Miami with $28.2 million in dead money.
So the only way would be a trade post-June 1.
Yes, Hill in Washington would be a superb move, but we doubt the front office would want to wait until then to get a quality player into the building...even if that player is Hill.
