When Luther Burden III first stepped onto Missouri's campus as a freshman two years ago, the Tigers were largely considered a laughingstock of the SEC. Both Burden and I began our college journeys at Mizzou at the same time, and the transformation I've witnessed has been nothing short of remarkable. In just three short years, Burden's presence and playmaking ability has completely changed the momentum and perception of the entire program as he prepares to leave for the NFL.
With the 2025 NFL Draft just a month away, speculation continues to mount over where Burden might land. CBS Sports' Chris Trapasso has projected the Philadelphia Eagles to select the Missouri wide receiver with the final pick of the first round.
"Burden is clearly talented, and he's young," Trapasso wrote. "The Eagles don't have a drastic need at receiver, so Burden can slowly work his way into a prominent role in Philadelphia."
If Burden falls to No. 32, the Eagles could be getting a massive steal. Before the 2024 college season, he was projected as a potential No. 1 overall pick, with Pro Football Focus listing him atop their initial draft board in September. No Missouri player has ever been selected first overall, and while his stock has since dropped, he's still regarded as one of the top talents in the class.
CBS Sports currently ranks Burden as the 13th overall prospect and the second-best receiver available. His dip in production in 2024-676 receiving yards compared to 1,212 in 2023-has led to some questions, but many analysts attribute this decline to external factors.
Missouri quarterback Brady Cook battled injuries last season, limiting Burden's opportunities. The Tigers' offensive line also struggled, making it difficult for the passing game to find rhythm. Despite these obstacles, Burden showcased his elite athleticism at the NFL Combine, running a 4.41 in the 40-yard dash at 6-foot, 206 pounds.
The Eagles already have a lethal receiving duo in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, with Jahan Dotson set to be the No. 3 option following his acquisition from Washington. However, depth beyond that trio is thin, making Burden an intriguing option.
If Philadelphia manages to land Burden at No. 32, they would further strengthen an already explosive offense. The move would give quarterback Jalen Hurts yet another elite weapon while allowing Burden to develop without immediate pressure to produce.
With the draft fast approaching, Eagles fans won't have to wait much longer to see if this scenario plays out-potentially adding another dynamic playmaker to their championship roster.
