Cowboys '1 Move Away' From Eagles And Commanders in NFC East

The Dallas Cowboys had quite a successful draft, but will that be enough to compete in the NFC East?

The feeling heading into the NFL Draft was that the Dallas Cowboys had to "hit" on the majority of their draft choices.

One could make the case that, based on BPA (best player available), in the first three rounds, Dallas did.

Tyler Booker, Donovan Ezeiruaku, and Shavon Revel Jr. are seen as starters, or if not, top of the rotation, and are three who can immediately impact on both sides of the ball.

Now we have Jaydon Blue and his blistering speed out of the backfield, and suddenly, Dallas' roster looks a little better. Yes, a receiver of note has to come in, and names are being thrown around right now (hello, Mr. George Pickens).

Indeed, we can make the argument that Dallas is now "1 move away.'' ... as it searches for that elusive "explosive No. 2 receiver.''

But ... "1 move away'' from what? A winning record? A playoff berth? Usurping both of the 2 leaders in the division?

But looking at Dallas compared to the other NFC East powers in Philadelphia and Washington, has Brian Schotteneheimer's team closed the gap on their rivals?

"In a vacuum, the first three picks really made a lot of sense," NFL.com writes. "The Cowboys might not be able to eliminate every concern before August, but they're foundationally solid. Will that matter in a suddenly fearsome NFC East, with the Eagles and Commanders having just faced off in the conference title game?

"That remains to be seen in head coach Brian Schottenheimer's first season."

In terms of foundation-building, the Cowboys have set quite the ground floor for Schotty to go about establishing what he wants to do in Year 1, and had a No. 2 receiver been selected, one could make the case that the gap between Dallas and the others might have closed a little.

Granted, this is purely subjective and based on Dallas' draft picks "hitting," which some think they will, but also, what if the Eagles and Commanders' picks "hit," too?

A fully healthy Cowboys team, we have seen, can match it with most in the NFL, but with so many unknowns regarding how Schottenheimer's scheme will play out, coupled with what many are projecting the early round draftee's to be early days, Dallas still feels a little ways away from the both the Eagles and Commanders.

Can that gap close if a No. 2 receiver is signed? Possibly, but we will not get our definitive answer until the regular season gets underway and Dallas plays both.

So, right now, it's as you were in the NFC East for Schottenheimer's third-placed Cowboys.
