The Cowboys are in the final throes of their spring practice schedule, with OTAs behind them and mandatory minicamp a soon-to-be memory. But, as is often the case in the NFL, the churn of the roster never really stops.
For the Cowboys, that churn has brought them to a pair of intriguing veteran defensive backs, who will have workouts for Dallas as they seek a spot back in the league. The team’s website highlighted five players on Thursday who are set to be considered by Dallas, but the most notable names on the list were a pair of corners, former Super Bowl champ Robert Rochell and former Lions starter Jerry Jacobs.
The Cowboys are also looking at offensive tackle Noah Fant and UFL players DeVere Levelston and Perrion Winfrey, both of whom are defensive linemen, the site noted.
Cowboys Have Questions in Defensive Backfield
While the Cowboys need depth along both sides of the line of scrimmage, one of the big roster questions centers on the defensive backfield, where Trevon Diggs’ injury could severely hamper the team if he can’t return to the field to start the season–and, it should be noted, there are concerns about how effective Diggs will be once he does get back.
Rochell played 48 games over the past four seasons, with the Rams (where he won a Super Bowl) and the Packers. He mostly played on special teams for Green Bay and and L.A. and was briefly with the Chiefs this spring before he was released.
As the Cowboys site noted, “He is a former fourth-round pick of Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams who went on to spend time with four other NFL teams, including the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025 — 48 total NFL games on his resume — before now getting a workout with the Cowboys.”
Jerry Jacobs Intriguing
Jerry Jacobs could be of more interest, and certainly has the potential to man a corner spot for an NFL team in 2025.
In 40 appearances with the Lions from 2021-23, Jacobs started 29 games, including 12 in his final season. But Detroit gradually pulled back on Jacobs from his role with the team as the 2023 season went on, and put him on IR with a knee injury that January.
He signed with the Rams but was let go with an undisclosed injury last August, and did not play in 2024, though he worked out for teams later in the year, including the Commanders.
Jacobs, though, is only 27 and looking to make an NFL comeback.
The site noted, “In 2023, Jacobs took the field as a starter against the Packers and grabbed two interceptions against Jordan Love (something the Cowboys could’ve used in January 2024), and finished the year with 55 combined tackles and three interceptions in 12 starts.”
