Dallas Cowboys tight end coach Lunda Wells has had an odd admission on tight and Jake Ferguson during the bye week.
FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are on their bye week; frankly, the franchise needed it for a host of reasons.
With the ship taking on water in this lame-duck season, the Cowboys' record of 3-3 feels like a very misleading record, given the number of blowouts Mike McCarthy's team has been on the receiving end of.
After the 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions, things have been tumultuous to say the least, with owner Jerry Jones making news (because, of course) with his tense radio interview on 105.3 The Fan in which he threatened to fire the radio hosts.
Now, with the bye week in full effect, tight ends coach Lunda Wells has made a revelation that has perhaps gotten lost amid all the Jerry talk: He hasn't been comfortable with Jake Ferguson being on the field so soon after his knee injury.
“I think this by week could help me kind of feel comfortable with him being out there,” Wells said. “This by week is gonna pay dividends for him tremendously, really for all the guys to kind of get their bodies back and really get their mind back focused. So this bye week hits really good for him personally just because of the injury, too.”
Ferguson picked up a knee injury in Week 1 against the Cleveland Browns, and while many thought it could be season-ending, Jake would only miss a week before returning in Week 3.
But was that too soon?
Going by Wells' comments, it appears some might think so. But as we have to wonder if Dallas' current predicament and the lack of firepower on offense perhaps forced the Cowboys' hand to play Ferguson earlier than they wanted, we also know that the Dallas medical staff has a good reputation for not putting its guys at risk.
Ferguson still managed 95, 49, 70, and 11 yards in his last four games, but it can't be ideal to put a player out there when the coach isn't entirely comfortable, can it?
Perhaps it was more of a case of Wells not being entirely comfortable with Ferguson's ability to do everything he needed for the offense, as opposed to the player being at any risk.
Either way, the bye week appears to have come at the right time, not only so the team can sort out the host of issues plaguing it but so Wells is comfortable with the "Big Biscuit" being on the field.
