Cowboys Coach Reveals Head-Turning Take On 2-RB Draft Haul

Last offseason, the Dallas Cowboys' running back room was a huge question mark for the offense - it isn't now.

Cowboys Coach Reveals Head-Turning Take On 2-RB Draft Haul

With free agency signings Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams, the Cowboys then added a pair of backs in Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah in the draft. Both have vastly different skill sets.

Blue is the lighting in a bottle with 4.38 speed, and Mafah is the downhill, bruising back, who picks up yards through sheer force.

With the room now consisting of two veterans and a host of younger backs, Cowboys' COO Stephen Jones feels comfortable with its current composition.

"We do feel really good," Jones said. "We like the two veterans we brought in, and we thought the two we picked complemented each other. We got the explosive, really juicy back [Jaydon Blue], then we got the big back [Phil Mafah], he's one of those guys with 'blue' character (a grading system term.)

"Hee's an outstanding man. Between those four guys, I like to think those four backs are a good start for us."

The training camp battle that will now ensue with Williams, Sanders, Blue, Mafah, Deuce Vaughn, and Malik Davis will be a fascinating one.

Blue is seen as a candidate to be Dallas' RB1 come Week 1 due to his dual-threat ability and home-run speed. The exact makeup of the depth chart behind him will be interesting.

Last season, many wondered how the running back position would land, and now, there's an abundance of options, each offering the offense something different.

It's a new era in Dallas, with Brian Schottenheimer wanting to establish the run and build a tough, physical football team. To do that, you need tough backs.

Indeed, "Schotty'' was asked about the idea of Blue/Mafah as starters.

“I would hope so,'' he said, "or otherwise we wouldn’t have drafted them.”

So .. after the draft, the Cowboys' backfield looks in good enough shape as Schottenheimer's offensive vision is starting to become clearer.
