As Mike McCarthy’s contract year looms, the Dallas Cowboys face swirling rumors about potential coaching candidates, circling around former players.

The Dallas Cowboys are navigating a turbulent season under head coach Mike McCarthy, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the 2024-2025 season. This uncertainty has ignited speculation about who Jerry Jones might tap as the team’s next head coach.

Among the swirling rumors is an interesting yet unlikely candidate: former Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

To begin … Deion Sanders has been at the forefront of the rumors despite his strong stance on not wanting to coach in the NFL, as he stated multiple times to include in a one-on-one interview with us at CowboysCountry.com.

However, that hasn’t slowed the national media down from leading with his name in the headlines as a top candidate.

Now Tony Romo, known for his playing days in Dallas and his highly successful broadcasting career with CBS Sports, has emerged as a rumored candidate for the Cowboys' potential coaching vacancy. However, the idea of Romo leaving anytime soon from his current role, where he reportedly earns $20 million annually, for the demands of NFL coaching seems highly unlikely.

Transitioning from the broadcast booth to the sidelines would represent a dramatic career shift for Romo, who has expressed some interest in coaching.

“Well, they’ll have to wait,” said Romo. “I’m sure one day I’ll coach. Right now, I’m happy with where I’m at. I’m enjoying it, and I’m lucky to be in this position calling the Super Bowl.

“You know, I have three young boys at home that I want to be around them and watch them grow up.”

That is a critical point here. Candice and Tony have three pre-teen sons. … so that might put Romo a decade away from making this sort of move.

While we are throwing out names, we should echo our Mike Fisher’s mention of Jason Witten’s name.

Witten has spent three years as the head coach at Liberty Christian in Argyle, Texas, where he led his team to a state championship in 2023. Additionally, Witten’s sons are top NCAA prospects and set to graduate high school in the coming years, with C.J. Witten committed to Rice and Cooper Witten receiving offers from top programs.

Despite Witten’s resume, Jerry Jones rarely hires coaches without NFL experience. The exception, Barry Switzer, came in the 1990s Witten, though, joins Romo as a Jones family favorite on a personal level.

Amongst other former players, there is one out there with NFL experience as a coaching option. Kellen Moore. Now the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, Moore presents the most NFL coaching experience of former players, but... Would Cowboys fans who practically shunned Moore out of the building just a few seasons ago really get on that bandwagon?

As the Cowboys prepare for a crucial Monday Night Football matchup against the Houston Texans, the coaching speculation underscores the high stakes surrounding Dallas’ future. Though anything is possible in the NFL, the Cowboys’ next head coach will likely come with proven experience, not just a legendary name.
