The Dallas Cowboys needed a running back in the NFL Draft, and they looked in their backyard with Texas flyer Jaydon Blue hearing his name called in the fifth round.
"Lightning in a bottle'' best describes Blue, who boasts a 4.38 40-yard dash time, and he will give new head coach Brian Schottenheimer's offense a home-run threat it hasn't had in years.
But while getting drafted is every player's dream, to be able to stay "home" and in the same state where they played college football, it means a little bit extra.
And for Blue, that is certainly the case.
"It's surreal," Blue said on the Draft Show. "I haven't really been in much contact with the Cowboys, but I'm just blessed, was always my dream to be able to play in the league for my hometown in the state of Texas. For the Cowboys coming to get me man, it feels great, I'm going to come in there, get to work from day one and I'm try to do everything I can to put [the] team in the best position."
Coming into a running back room with Miles Sanders, Javonte Williams, fellow draftee Phil Mafah, Deuce Vaughn, and Malik Davis, it will be quite the battle when training camp begins.
Given the Cowboys have invested so much in the offensive line with Tyler Booker, the team's first-round draft choice, having Houston native Blue behind the new "Wall" could see some fireworks happening.
Not a brute of a runner, more shifty as a back while also having solid pass-catching chops, there is a thought that it might not be too long before the 5-9, 196-pound Jaydon is flying up the Cowboys' running back depth chart.
Yes, it is early, but Blue as a Cowboy feels like a nice fit, and when you factor in he's a Texas native, too, well, that's just good for the soul.
