That didn't last long.
Well, that was fun while it lasted (for the folks spreading rumors, that is).
Wednesday afternoon, one of the most absurd rumors of the offseason began to spread like wildfire as a Cleveland sports personality claimed of "sources" stating the Browns were negotiating a trade to acquire Dak Prescott.
Because it had to do with these beloved Cowboys and arguably their most important player, this topic deserved attention. Whether or not that was positive attention is in the eye of the beholder.
For lack of a better explanation, though, most fans knew this was bologna.
And, indeed, it did not take long for the rumors to get shut down.
The Dak Prescott trade rumors have officially been put to bed
NFL Network's Jane Slater, a well-respected Cowboys reporter, took to social media to squash the rumors as soon as she could.
"I run it all down when working this beat and the Dallas Cowboys are NOT working on trading Dak to the Browns. In fact, texts with two sources tell me “fake news” and “absolutely not” before this gets any sort of wheels," Slater posted.
As if anyone believed the rumors to begin with, it was still refreshing to hear a legitimate source speak on the hilarious topic at hand. It never made sense to begin with, nor could anybody make it make sense.
First off, the Browns wouldn't be able to take on Prescott's contract alongside Deshaun Watson's.
And, for anybody thinking Jerry Jones is crazy enough to take Watson's contract in exchange, you've got another thing coming.
Let's be blunt, here. Jerry could definitely be classified as many things, but he's not completely insane.
The Cowboys are less than a year removed from giving Dak a huge, fresh contract. Despite all of the rumors and whispers, Dallas seems committed to their quarterback for the foreseeable future. He isn't the problem.
If Dallas were to even entertain the idea of trading Dak, at this point, they'd be admitting to a rebuild. There are no logical options, on the table right now, to help this team compete at a higher level than the one Dak currently allows them to.
A Dak Prescott trade isn't happening. Thankfully, we know that much is true.
Now, Jerry, if you'd care to do something notable this offseason, feel free. We've been waiting.
