The 2024 season was supposed to be where Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson elevated himself into the upper echelon of tight ends in the NFL.
However, the football gods had other ideas.
Fresh off a Pro Bowl season in 2023 (761 yards, five touchdowns), Ferguson only totaled 494 yards in 2024 and didn't have a touchdown.
Of course, there were reasons for the big drop-off, with Jake suffering a knee injury in Week 1, which hampered him throughout the year. Additionally, he had a concussion that sidelined him, making it hard to find the continuity he craved.
And looking back on it, the "big biscuit" is ready to put that firmly in the rearview mirror.
"My knee hurt for sure, the concussion was weird, but I've said this before, if I'm out on the field, I should be able to give it my all," Ferguson said. "I definitely wasn't satisfied with how I played last year, I don't think I've ever played a full season and not scored a touchdown. So that was something I came into this offseason really working on, and so just really tried to dial in on that and make sure I was lights out."
Being in a contract year and coming off a poor 2024 season, there is no shortage of motivation for Ferguson to return to his Pro Bowl level.
Having quietly gone about his business this offseason, Ferguson and Dak Prescott lit up minicamp on Day 2 with a 22-yard seam route touchdown, a staple of that connection over the past two years.
So, Jake is slowly getting his groove and confidence back in Brian Schottenheimer's offense. With the injury issues firmly behind him, Jake is pushing to be a key member of the unit, which now boasts a solid group of weapons.
With Brevyn Spann-Ford and Luke Schoonmaker, Ferguson is the leader of the tight end room, and given that he is in the final year of his rookie contract, the "big biscuit" needs to have a bounce-back season for the ages.
And it appears he's off to a great start.
