FRISCO - The quickie-video is compelling.
It shows Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones inside his helicopter. It mentions his friendship with Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, the Pro Football Hall of Famer who played for the Cowboys from 1995-99 while winning a Super Bowl ring.
And it strains to make a connection there between the Cowboys and Colorado two-way Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
"I've heard Jerry really likes Travis Hunter," The Athletic's Dianna Russini said in a video clip from her Friday episode of the "Scoop City" podcast.
And ... the internet goes nuts.
In advance of the April 24 NFL Draft, when "America's Team" holds the No. 12 overall pick, there has been entertaining media speculation about the concept of a blockbuster trade-up to secure the Hunter.
Some of it is purely wishful thinking, as exhibited by NFL Network's Daniel Jeremiah, who has urged the Cowboys to get creative and make a move up the board.
And why?
"I miss the days when the Cowboys were aggressive & fun," Jeremiah wrote on his social media. "Spice it up. Trade up for Travis Hunter."
"Spice it up,'' of course, it a horrible reason.
With boots on the ground in Dallas, former Cowboys scout Bryan Broaddus on 105.3 Fan has pitched in with his own version of "fun,'' suggesting that the team flip the pick at No. 12 plus the Cowboys' second- and fifth-round picks this year to launch themselves into position to take Hunter should he drop to No. 5.
There is balanced sense there. (Of course, Hunter has to be available at No. 5.) Hunter would start at cornerback from Day 1 for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and might do the same at receiver.
Our Mike Fisher does note, "We're talking about a guy in Hunter who is arguably the most uniquely gifted prospect in years — and the fact that he is able to play both wide receiver and cornerback at an elite level would just happen to help the Cowboys in two positions of need."
Sounds "fun.'' And "spicy.'' Anything else, Fish?
"Want a truth-bomb?'' Fish says. "It's all driven by PR baloney. Needless to say, Dallas 'likes' the guy who I think is the best player in the draft. I'm pretty sure they 'like' Abdul Carter as well. But leaking this, with Jerry's name attached? Marketing nonsense.''
Indeed, while this story is making the rounds, pushing the concept that Jerry is as we speak working on a path to get the two-way star because he "has piqued the 82-year-old owner's interest,'' the highly-respected Russini herself tucks an important note into her otherwise-entertaining video.
"Just because they like him,'' she says, all but winking into the camera, "doesn't mean they're going to do it.''
Oh. Then ... never mind.
