It took 10 seconds.
Within 10 seconds after the Monday morning breaking news on the Green Bay Packers leaking their decision to release two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, the texts started coming in.
Within a few minutes after that, social media and the internet were ablaze.
And here we go again, with your Dallas Cowboys attached to an available big name...with nobody pausing to take a breath to consider the facts.
First, to Green Bay, where the two sides have been attempting for months to work out a revised contract...with the team uncomfortable with continuing to pay Alexander on the four-year, $84 million extension they just gave him a year ago.
What is their issue? Injuries, mostly, as Alexander has missed significant time in three of the past four seasons.
In other words, to some degree, he's the Packers' version of Trevon Diggs.
When healthy? He's a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback (like Diggs).
He's still young at 28. (Diggs will turn 27 this season.)
But as excited as Cowboys Nation gets about stuff like this, Dallas' hesitation here will — and should — mirror Green Bay's hesitation.
Jaire's cap numbers presently? That'd be $25 mil for this year and $27 mil for next year...though there is contractually escapability after 2025.
So, he could be a one-year rental and maybe he won't demand $20 million plus.
Of course, if you're going to do that, why not just trade for Miami's Jalen Ramsey? (Which the Cowboys are openly saying they have no interest in doing.)
Alexander was a 2018 first-round pick; he's got pedigree. While totalling 12 interceptions over his career, he's a playmaker. Though not on a level with Diggs.
Which brings us back to Dallas.
In 2023, Diggs played just two games. He played 11 games in 2024 before he suffered another season-ending injury. Now he might miss half of this season.
They therefore have DaRon Bland and a bunch of guys in the cornerback room at present.
Should the Cowboys "jump at the chance" to sign Alexander? No.
Should they explore it, call on it, ponder the finances and the injuries and the risks? Sure.
But that takes more than 10 seconds. Or even 10 minutes.
